It has been said that the past is the past.
Let it go and just move on.This may
sound like a hopeful idea but the reality can
be that the past breaks very unexpectedly
into the present moment. This can happen
when unresolved childhood memories
- experiences, losses, pain, fears
-
are awakened in the current moment.
Usually we are unaware of these memories
and their power to continue to affect us.
It is at these times that our reactions
may feel way out of proportion to what
just happened.
We can feel puzzled, confused or possibly
frightened by feelings and reactions that
seem to come out of the blue and overtake us.
Exploring memories as they come up in counseling can lead to feeling more in charge of our responses as we live our daily lives.
